Emergency services employment (Police, Fire, Ambulance) requires:

1. Australian Citizens & Permanent Residents
Employment: ✔ Eligible for all Police, Fire, Ambulance, and emergency‑service jobs. Volunteering: ✔ Eligible for all volunteer emergency organisations.
2. Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)
Work rights: ✔ Can work only for the sponsoring employer. Emergency services employment: ✘ Cannot apply for Police, Fire, or Ambulance unless specifically sponsored (rare). Emergency services volunteering: ✔ Allowed if unrelated to paid employment and not replacing paid work.
Emergency Service Worker (ANZSCO 441211) is eligible for 482 sponsorship in some streams.
3. Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491)
Work rights: ✔ Full work rights in regional areas. Emergency services employment: ✔ Possible for Ambulance/Paramedic roles (ANZSCO 411111) in regional services. ✘ Police and Fire usually require PR or citizenship. Emergency services volunteering: ✔ Allowed (SES, CFA, RFS, CFS, etc.).
Emergency Service Worker (441211) is eligible for 491 nomination.
4. Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visa (Subclass 494)
Work rights: ✔ Full work rights for the sponsoring employer. Emergency services employment: ✔ Possible only if sponsored into an emergency‑service occupation (rare). Emergency services volunteering: ✔ Allowed.
Emergency Service Worker (441211) is eligible for 494 sponsorship.
5. Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)
Work rights: ✔ Full work rights. Emergency services employment: ✔ Paramedicine graduates may work as Ambulance Officers if registered. ✘ Police and Fire require PR/citizenship. Emergency services volunteering: ✔ Allowed.
Ambulance Officer (411111) is eligible for 485 pathways.
6. Student Visa (Subclass 500)
Work rights: ✔ 48 hours per fortnight during study periods; unlimited during breaks. Emergency services employment: ✘ Cannot join Police, Fire, or Ambulance as employees. Emergency services volunteering: ✔ Allowed (SES, CFA, RFS, Surf Life Saving). ⚠ Must not breach visa conditions or be seen as unpaid work replacing a paid role.
7. Training Visa (Subclass 407)
Work rights: ✔ Only for the approved training program. Emergency services employment: ✔ Possible for structured emergency‑services training (e.g., paramedic training). Emergency services volunteering: ✔ Allowed if unrelated to the training program.
Emergency Service Worker (441211) is eligible for 407 training visa pathways.
8. Working Holiday Visas (417 / 462)
Work rights: ✔ Full work rights with employer‑time limits. Emergency services employment: ✘ Police and Fire not eligible. ✔ Some ambulance patient‑transport roles possible (private sector). 9. Bridging Visas (A, B, C, E)

12. Temporary Humanitarian Concern Visa (786) & Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (790)
Work rights: ✔ Full work rights. Emergency services employment: ✔ Possible for Ambulance roles. ✘ Police and Fire require PR/citizenship. Emergency services volunteering: ✔ Allowed.
🚓 Police Forces (All States & AFP)
Requirement:
Australian citizenship (mandatory in all jurisdictions)
Some states allow PR to apply, but citizenship required before appointment
Therefore: ✘ Temporary visa holders cannot become police officers. ✔ They may volunteer in community‑safety programs (not sworn roles).
